I'm not sure /co/ understands what a self-insert is. A character sharing a interests or traits with their creator isn't a self-insert, it's just writing what you know.

A self insert is usually more of a mary-sue who is a obvious stand-in for the creator. And even that can work if the creator is self-aware enough to include their flaws into the character too.
