>>116924347Genie (her real name and current whereabouts are hidden for her protection since what happened to her occurred while she was a child) was, as another anon said, kept in a potty chair or lashed to a crib for almost the entirety of her life, and was reportedly beaten if she made noise. She was rescued at the age of 13 with no education whatsoever and severe mental and physical trauma. For psychological researchers she was forbidden fruit. There was a large push to have her development from that point studied, but when she reached 18 she was moved back into her mother's custody, where she subsequently neglected her all over again, leading her to be moved into a series of foster homes that were abusive as well. In 1978, she was moved in with her grandmother who forbade any further research, and ghosted her.
Afterwards, there was a large debate over whether it was ethical even to have studied her for the ~5 years or so it was possible, with some equating the studies to cribbing Mengele's notes.
As of now, she's living in a home for developmentally disabled adults in California. She's apparently capable of sign language, but not much besides.
