Back before COVID happened, DC and Diamond renegotiated their contract, the first time since WB was bought by AT&T. The new contract removed the clause that said that DC had first shot at buying Diamond out if Diamond ever wanted to sell. Geppi bragged about this after the new contract was signed.
But the contract also had an exit clause in it if Diamond could not provide services for 60 days. Diamond signed it, because that would never happen on their watch.
COVID happened, and oops.

I really wouldn't miss any current DC titles other than Green Lantern and a couple imprint books. Aside from Hellblazer everything I like is already a limited series, and with the sales it won't last long either. This is probably the lowest they've been since I started reading comics, and there's a good chance that by next year I won't be reading any DC books. It's a strange thing to say, but with the current state of the books I really don't care about the big shake-ups. There's nothing left for me to lose from them.

Back in October 2019, Rich Johnston claimed that she was planning another two-month event like Convergence (that she also ran) because people needed more lead time for 5G.
With 5G seemingly dead, I wonder if that "Endless Winter" promo that came out is another version of that.

A good chunk of execs don't know the difference between comic talent's jobs and skills so their perception of Lee as a comic superstar is that he does 'everything' so he must know how it all works and never realizing he's just a penciler and has really never been creative.

Also he's mostly inoffensive, Asian and yes most comic fans will say "I love Jim Lee" even though they are really saying "I love the stuff he drew 25+ years ago that somebody else wrote!"

Personally I think he has no vision and absolutely no sense of leadership which makes sense that he'd thrive in a corporate environment.

Bat/Supes/Wondy will be perennials with Flash/Aquaman/GL/Justice League rounding it out. Side characters like Supergirl, Batwoman, Robin and Teen Titans will get spotlights.

JSA is not going away though if they're going to be in Black Adam.

Whatever plans they have for movies, HBOMax and the CW will still get comics synergy, so we'll probably see stuff with Stargirl, Shazam/Black Adam/JSA, Doom Patrol?, Justice League Dark, Suicide Squad.

They will still mine their library of B & C listers for TV, cartoon and movie/media spin offs

In the long term it'll probably be good for the industry (like Raven was one of DC's best sellers when she could never sell for shit in floppy format) but it's the "franchise" focus that bothers me. It's been proven that WB can't get anyone to care about shit that isn't Batman and/or isn't interested in pushing non Batman shit. And I doubt AT&T will be better.

Also I'm confused as to why their collected editions department keeps getting shit on, if anything AT&T should push them real hard so they can actually get old shit that isn't Batman, Watchmen, or Sandman to sell.

old Legion of SuperHeroes isn't as good as Watchmen or Sandman.

Most people are not interested in having to follow multiple volumes of old continuity storylines.

Comic smarks hate the New52 but it was a bookstore success that gave normies a modern starting point to jump into buying - which is what Warner wants.

It's a little odd that they fired the editors who oversaw the YA and Black Label lines because those were the few successes DC has had but it looks like ATT wants to find a way to merge a comixology-like subscription service + YA/Black Label bookstore trades + cheap Walmart reprints

Didio and Johns were too busy fighting over 80s Crisis nostalgia & Bendis "all new marvel" style reboots for the Direct Market

This is like when Avi Arad got pissed that the X Men line was completely impenetrable to people who liked the X Men movie.

What killed them was never truly being evergreens and instead being alt U books. They already had as many evergreen trades as anyone could want. Snyders batman was NEVER going to be "the" batman. Ever. Not in a millions years.

It's all about movies and vidya. That's where capeshit is being consumed the most.

Comic books are a different vibe from the mainstream stuff. If you liked Arkham Batman or Batfleck, there's zero guarantee you want to sit through 100 issues Tom King's interpretation.

The DCAU is still popular, but it's a much different vibe too. You had stuff that really surprised people when it aired because it wasn't like muh comics. The DCAMU tried to be more "comic accurate" and tried to have New 52 synergy for a bit and the lasting memory of it is how the universe got miserably nuked at the end. Comics are best as IP farm where other writers can just take the characters and make them palatable for normal people, whom do not read comics.

I've never been a "wrong generation" person, but I really wish I could have experienced comics in the late 80s through the mid 2000s as it happened. This news all depresses me.
Companies need to make money, but for those that manage art and creative output there needs to be a balance between making money and respect for the medium. And with comics, that respect for the medium needs to extend to the history and what came before. Clearly we won't be getting that with th we people they're bringing in along with further gutting the collections department.

Don’t make me laugh. Just because a handful of titles like Watchmen and DKR succeeded, that didn’t make the dark and gritty 80’s a good thing. It led to the excesses of the early 90’s when comics tried to square the circle of a predominantly young leadership and a desire for edgy maturity, so we get Spider-Man punching AIDS in the face. Books like DKR only work because they stand in contrast to the colourful, adventurous fare the American medium is known for. Make all comics like DKR and Watchmen, and you’ve utterly missed the point. I experienced DC comics from mid 90s through 2000s and let me tell you, i wish i hadn't. The 2011 reboot fucking killed me. It was one of the most excruciating thing i had to experience as a fan of anything. That's probably what some Star Wars fan had to go through, i imagine. I firmly believe that the New 52 was what killed DC. Not only as a publishing house for comics, but as a household for animation.

It was most of Didio's editorial decisions. He believed he was hired to fix DC rather than lead it and constantly alienated its readers. He made a few great decisions but overall he and Alex Alonso made the shit judgment call that the customers were the problem.

But it does provide more details regarding what DC's Two-Year Plan to become a very different looking comic book publisher, and explains further the decimation of the Collected Editions department at DC, and also just how much of an impact these Warner Bros changes are having on the comic book publisher. As it so happens I bought comics during those decades and so far none of the CG titles remind me of those books. They read a lot more like the failed indie b&w books that would make 3-5 issues before closing up shop, except they don't have interesting premises and the art is crap. Like I said earlier, RAGS is the only one so far that isn't complete shit.
Give me a comic book with a genuinely interesting central character (not another grunt team), a comic book premise, some fan service and a writer who isn't a complete fucking retard. TALENT.
