>>116742249From a broad perspective, it feels nothing like Star Trek. I understand the desire to do something more light-hearted and comedic, but the way this show is presented is not the right way. I can't believe I'm about to say this but the Orville is a more legitimate comedy-based Star Trek kind of show. The writing is Rick and Morty level of shit with a Star Trek coat of paint, and the two styles clash horrendously, it's impossible to buy the basic premise of the show. The pacing way too fucking breakneck and while I expect them to get a better grasp of this as the show goes on, it definitely stuck out in the first episode badly. Beckett's character is horrendous, there is literally nothing to like about her. Being a rash, irreverent cunt isn't even impossible to write well but she most certainly checks all the shitty boxes without checking any of the good ones. Plus her entire arc in the first episode is nonsensical, the Federation is accepting that planet into it, but giving farm equipment to local farmers is somehow not already part of their mission? Shit like this is where it barely qualifying as "Star Trek" hampers both the plot and the characters tremendously and there's no way to write around that. Brad I guess is ok, but he's yet another copy & paste incompetent weak male lead, it's just tiresome at this point. Tendi and Eugene are basically non-characters in the first episode, I can't really make a judgement on them so early but they certainly didn't hook me. It doesn't feel like a Star Trek series and while it was obviously never intended to be something like TNG or DS9, it doesn't even have that baseline connection, and the characters are already played out stereotypes in the first episode.
