its not just a strategy by fox, it is literally canon in that book based on how the events transpire. fox didnt lie, he just said what yatsuhashi told him. coco, who didnt have the message from yatsuhashi about the grimm attracted to aura assumed fox was lying"

so, why would the grimm not attack yatsuhashi? he is confirmed to have negative thoughts the page before pic related (with him being shocked/scared that he can erase his own memories), so there is little reason that i have found for yatsuhashi not being attacked. you could argue that the huntsman behind him had more negative emotions than him, but this is a hard point to argue.
