There's just so much going on here that makes it feel like a sick joke. First of all, the concept is fucking stupid. I think it was just the last 6-7 years of cringey identity politics stuff that Marvel and DC have been forcing coming to a head. It was ridiculous and blatant enough for casuals to take notice, obviously actual comic people were always gonna hate it and it was so on the nose that the tumblr/Twitter-types it was trying to primarily appeal to took it as either making fun of them or trying to make money off them.

Also obviously this wasn't a big factor but people found Kibblesmith looking like a real life version of the basedjack meme kinda funny.
