Season 3 had its ups and downs, but the part of the storyline where Ezran goes back to Katolis and makes a series of absolutely batshit stupid decisions with no coherence to them whatsoever was absolute trash and should not have been included in the final draft. And hell, they could have left it out and basically nothing would have changed in the long term, because it basically doesn't affect the status quo!

It's pretty clear that his Big Cool Character-Developing Decision in season 2 to go back and be king was actually the crew writing themselves into a corner, and that whole mess of a storyline was their attempt to get themselves out of it, but there's so many other ways they could have accomplished the same goal in the same amount of screentime without it being fucking stupid. Which is why I say that it destroyed most of my faith in the writers.

Season 3 was ok outside of that plotline, but it really drags it down.

My problem with Ezran's decision is that within the confines of what he knows when he makes his decision to step down, from the standpoint of mending the rift between humans and elves standing and fighting against the other human armies is the better option as it hinders the chance of a major human incursion into Xadia in the near future by drawing down existing human forces.

On top of that, the loss of Katolin lives could very well be less in a hard-fought but winnable conflict against the other human kingdoms than the unknown toll that a campaign against Xadia could yield.

Korra's first season was meant to be its last and it was written with that in mind - blowing through most of the good ideas and rushing to an end.
Korra's second season was meant to be its last and it was written with that in mind, hence the "it's kinda hard to top this" final battle between Korra and the god of evil.
Then they got word that there would be two more seasons.

I'm not saying that they didn't fuck up in a lot of ways that they should have prevented, but there's no getting around the fact that the disjointed nature of the show was a direct result of it being intended for one season, then two, then four.

TDP was written with a plan for 7 seasons, with the ending of the third season intended as a "well if we can only get this far that wouldn't be too bad" point.

Upon rewatch, season 1 doesn't even look that bad. The 5 fps is mostly annoying during action scenes and when Amaya is doing sign language, but it's fine when they're just walking and talking.

Compared to other fantasy that makes it an important detail (GoT being an obvious one) I don't think that the show has stressed it to the point of it being impossible for a sanctioned "Illegitimate" child from the side of the relationship with a blood claim or an adopted child to claim the throne.

My "word of God" exposure is limited so there might be something relevant that I don't know of, and the show makes it clear that a blood relationship is important for ascension owing to Ezran's ascent over Callum, but I think it's less of an established stumbling block than people are making it out to be.

The only sensible explanation I can think of is that dark magic is somehow destructive to some sort of magical version of the carbon cycle. Like, primal magic cycles magical energy between interchangeable states from one being to another, while dark magic shortcuts the process but annihilates finite magical energy irreversibly.

In early episodes the show tried to show how racist the elves were towards humans for no reason, and that despite dark magic being kinda sketchy, it was an ok way to use magic as long as you didn't kill cute animals or whatever. So I would agree that that's what the show implies, i.e. dark magic empowers weak ass humans and dragons and elves don't like that because of racism, however in later seasons even the egalitarian main characters conclude that dark magic is super evil and shouldn't be used at all and that you have to find enlightenment to cast magic the natural way, so in the end I don't know what the show is trying to imply here.

The idea being that magic can't be farmed. Growing a field of magic flowers to harvest for dark magic would just be a giant magic energy sink that gradually drains it from the universe. The flowers have magic because they're part of a magic ecosystem in the same way they received nitrogen and carbon from the biological ecosystem, and harvesting them for dark magic is the magi-ecological equivalent of shooting harvests of crops into the sun.

I mean, that's how I'd explain it, but I'm sure they'll come up with some kind of bullshit.

Two former staffers at Wonderstorm said their ideas weren't listened to. Neither was a writer. The former twitter manager has been the most vocal, and the most nonsensical. Her big THE OUTRAGE OF IT story was that Aaron thought they should use a picture of Rayla's foster-fathers kissing as a promo image, and she was against it because the dudes haven't gotten their happy ending with it. The other staff sided with him and he was smug about it. That's the example she gave of horrible treatment.

For the most part "The SJWs" love the show because it has a diverse cast and shit, and being someone that thinks that's a good idea is all that it takes you to qualify for being a "SJW" to post-2016 /co/.

Netflix still doesn't get the appeal of the weekly format for some people. Giving people something to look forward to each weak invests them in the show in ways that a bomb doesn't. That's how some shows got to have obsessive fans for decades. You spend a longer time with the story when its released weekly, it becomes a bigger part of your life.

It also allows shows to better spread socially because it gives a wider window for discussion. Suddenly people are discussing and therefore promoting a show for a few months as opposed to a few weeks at best, and it gives more time for curious onlookers to join in and participate in those promotional conversations. Nowadays if I watch a show a month after it premieres, the odds of me finding and jumping into a public discussion at work or online are pretty vastly diminished.

Reasons why dark magic is considered "evil" despite not being objectively "evil" (whatever the fuck that means):

EVERYONE says it's dangerous and immoral. So who do you have to be in order to use it? What kind of person thinks they're qualified to make use of a dangerous and powerful force that makes them turn ugly and has hitherto unknown corruptive effects? A smarty-pants know it all with a messiah complex, like Viren, or a brainless buffoon who never considers the consequences, like Claudia. It's not that dark magic is evil - it's that dark MAGICIANS are evil. They're either narcissists or bimbos with no in-between, either believing that THEY are qualified to wield unlimited power because only THEY see the right way, or simply not thinking about it at all.

I cannot into chibi and little girls cartoons and Primal is on endless hiatus but somehow I didn't feel the urge to start this one here yet. It looks too much like generic fantasy with the typical stories about elves, chosen ones and magical dragons you always get but I am willing to give it a chance if there is some cool twist or interesting premise behind it or if it has an interesting villain at least.

Give me a list of Western animated series that did "Tolkein-inspired fantasy" totally straight.

Not a parody or comedy. Nobody pulling out a machine gun laser. Just swords, sorcery, and dragons, character-driven. One epic story, not going for "adventure of the week."

You can say it's "generic" but it's literally the only animated series of its kind in Western animation.

I was talking about high fantasy in general not cartoons. Agree that cartoons make it even worse by parodying it, but just because it's a non-comedic and drawn version of generic stuff that is usually live action only doesn't make it interesting to me.

At the same time you've got a pretty nerdy girl that likes fart and poop jokes, a jock himbo that becomes a hero, a trained assassin that gets stuck repeatedly saving the lives of her targets because oh shit the politics underwent a total 180, etc. I'm not going to say it's the best shit ever, but man I wish more fantasy novels were half this good. because its such a cliche that nobody before this was dumb enough to use it. if you had to think of the most cliche, generic high fantasy world you could ever possibly come up with, it would be exactly what the dragon prince is. other high fantasy universes at least try to switch it up. Even James Camerons Avatar has a universe with similiar high fantasy type fauna but still manages to make itself unique in other ways like interesting creature design rather than just fucking generic ass dragons.

I have to admit I get a certain delight out of someone trying to be "the left eating itself" only to have the larger "left" just go "nah" and keep on making the show with interracial families and gay supporting characters like nothing happened.
