It's been brought up before that the humans of this comic likely exist in sort of zoo where the robots are caretakers, and while most robots are part of a centralized AI most of them have no awareness of the broader importance of their jobs.
The AI just have little tasks it preoccupies the humans with. There was a whole arc where it got the humans to feel like criminal reform for robots was a big deal, even though the machines were oddly content with simply staying in boxes for all eternity - likely because they're just reintegrated to the main AI. Or when a human like Faye has a difficult time socializing, they give her a butch robotic mate.
