>>115837587In the 1996 election, Graydon Creed was running as a third party candidate on an anti-mutant platform. Onslaught's attack on New York, and the Fantastic Four and Avengers' apparent deaths in battle with him have resulted in Creed having a strong chance of winning, when he's assassinated in an issue of X-Factor. While X-Factor are dealing with Mystique and her allies, someone else killed Creed, using a plasma weapon, to imply it could have been Havok, who was leading the Brotherhood at the time.
The plot isn't resolved in X-Factor over the next 2 years before the book ends, and isn't resolved anywhere else. It eventually gets explained in Fabian Nicieza's X-Men Forever mini, with the assassin being a time travelling Mystique, which was why she had no memory of having done it before.
Graydon Creed has since been resurrected, turned into a robot, killed, and resurrected again.
