Early on in the series, Jerry accused Rick of being a freeloader and thought he could make him live in a retirement home to get rid of him. While Rick is probably living at the family's house without bringing any money to the household, he is however shown to be very competent and it's doubtful he'd stay at a retirement home. When Summer teased him about being a freeloader, he immediately started a store so successful it put the store she worked at out of business. The only reason he dissolved his business is because he can't prove a point to her anymore. The point is, he doesn't need the family for any tangible reason like food or shelter. If he really didn't care about them he'd probably just go live anywhere he wanted to. So whatever Rick sticks around for, it ain't out of necessity.

Jerry on the other hand loses his job halfway through season one and hasn't found a new job under normal circumstances. Whenever he finds some amount of success that puts him above his family, he seems able to ignore them to further his own ego. An alternate version of himself that never started a family in the first place and found all the success he could ever want only ever sought out Beth once he hit rock bottom.

I'm getting the feeling Jerry is projecting his own indifference towards the family onto Rick to distract from the fact that he only sticks around himself because he'd be nothing without them.
