Nice, I know a lot of people say his more recent stuff isn't good, but I think his stuff is always at the very least fun. His visual style is always THE visual style for animated super heroes for me.

That's such a small part of the movie though, I never understood how it mares not just the movie, but his body of work. And doesn't Batman fuck her in some of the comics before this as well? Hard to blame him for incorporating something from the source material (as vague as what "source material" can mean in this sense).

I actually haven't watched all these shorts. I saw 2, I think they were alright, hardly offensive.

Anyway, even if you think he's edgy and dark now, isn't his stuff at least still entertaining? That's all that really matters.

What people don't get is that Bruce Timm never really had anything to do with what made the DCAU good.
He's not a writer, he's not a director, he's an animator and artist.

This is why everything he's done that tries to sell itself on the DCAU legacy has been fucking shit. It's like how the Picard show gave Patrick Stewart a ridiculous amount of control despite having nothing to do with the actual creative part of TNG.

It wasn’t so much that I didn’t see the merit in his Grimdark version of Superman. It’s just. Well it was coming out off of the heels of Injustice 2 and Batman V Superman. Both stories that had Superman going bad and killing criminals. And well . . . That soured how i felt about Mexican Superman.

It was an entirely original story written to up the personal stakes for Batman personally, and to give Barbara something to do before she gets shot in a misguided attempt to give her something resembling agency while still befitting the mood of the story. Or they just couldn't figure out how to pad out runtime and just bullshitted something.

So are Dini's. Dini is actually REALLY good at writing comics, it bugs me that he doesn't get more work. I still very fondly remember his run on Detective Comics, back in the day. That solo Joker story set at Christmastime is probably one of my favorite one-shot comics ever written.

I feel like Bruce Timm and the DCAU forgot Catwoman existed. She was only mentioned off handedly once in Beyond, and I guess they threw her in the Beyond comics as a shadow for one panel.
We got that god awful Hush Adaptation but that's unrelated. Why the hell won't they utilize her when she's one of their most popular girl characters? Did Timm push her out so he could push his cringy Batgirl ship? Were they scared off by the awful Catwoman movie?

I think maybe the awful cat woman movie resulted in DC putting pressure on them to stop using the character for a time. And then by the time the series ended they just didn’t see any point in reintroducing her.

The problem is animators not sticking to the style of the Korean studios that animated TAS and preferring to "update it". B/STAS, JL, JLU and Beyond were all perfect because of the art style invoking American retrofuturistic aspirations and exceptionalism. Beyond even more so in many cases for taking that and distorting it into the nightmarish corrupted version of the American dream which leads to envy and crime at blue and white collar levels as well as pollution and overpopulation and overabundance displaying a degenerate and complacent consumer society.

In the DCAU, at least, this is absolutely true. Bruce and Selina are never really "soulmates" in the DCAU. They really aren't in any universe but they're DEFINITELY not in the DCAU. Crucially, Bruce learns her secret identity right away, but I don't think she ever learns his.

Mask of the Phantasm kind of proves Bruce can't do love and Batman at the same time. And then it's cemented by JLA/JLU and Batman Beyond.

Bruce is given multiple opportunities to dial back just a little bit and be happy with someone who loves him but he chooses to be alone. Wonder Woman had literally no drawbacks and he still said no.
