Because the Avatar state is a manifestation of Raava. So if the Avatar dies during that, he takes Raava with him and end the current Avatar cycle. That is until the next harmonic convergence when Raava can escape from Vatuu and find a new body to link with.

It was explained in Korra. The Avatar State causes the Avatar to merge with whichever entity makes them the Avatar in the first place, thus if they both died, then nobody would be able to instill any power in the Avatar and give them the wisdom of the previous Avatars for guidance.

Although, it’s also possible that there is a way to reunite the two and continue the cycle, but something mystic would have to be done that would probably take some time.

Instead of breaking the cycle by dying in the avatar state, the cycle was renewed just under a century after the events of TLA thanks to Korra for opening the portals between worlds. Now she and any future avatars won't be able to contact any of the past avatars for wisdom. The writers for LOK fucked everything Aang did over by making it all insignificant.

There were hints of the lion turtles in TLA long before Aang's encounter with one, like in the spirit library. The real asspull is when they made it so that the lion turtles were the one that gave people the power of the elements. What about the previous lore on who taught people bending? The moon taught the water tribe how to bend water, the sky bisons taught the air nomads how to bend air, the dragons taught the fire nation how to bend fire, and the badger moles taught the earth kingdom how to bend earth.

A lot of people think that "bending" means using the "power of (insert element)" (a term used every time instead of "bending" in the Wan flashbacks) with proficiency and technique.
"The way Wan uses Fire... It's like nothing I've ever seen. He uses it like it's an extension of his body." The hunters had the power of Fire, but they just shot it from their hands like it was a gun. Wan actually controlled it's flow and sustained movement, e.g. "bending"
At least that's what a video offers as an explanation.

The idea is that every previous Avatar is lending the current one their power and experience, so there's a moment of vulnerability in power. When Katara prevented Aang's death, she healed every Avatar who lended him his power as well.

problem is if you take that interesting part, you're really gonna have to take the rest of the story as lore. What Avatar Korra did in the end of the 2nd season pales in comparison with what Aang did in the entirety of ATLA, and she beat the bad guy with an asspull. Doesn't help that harmonic convergence fucked everything up in that universe. Whatever Aang did is now completely insignificant. Whatever all the past avatars did is now insignificant. The writers just decided to renew the cycle, now any future iterations of the avatar won't be able to look to avatars before korra for guidance like how Aang sought guidance from Roku and Kyoshi, and how Roku and Kyoshi sought guidance from previous ones.

I still regret watching the second season most especially. First season of LOK was okay, but the 2nd season just makes me cringe too much.

That may be true sure but we all already knew about the comet and how the fire nation would use it to do something evil from the very beginning, so Aang was under time pressure. Look at LOK, and how she beat Vaatu. Jinora comes over and shows the light inside vaatu and now vaatu is vanquished boom avatar saves the universe, no 10,000 years of darkness for everyone hooray. They just kept increasing the stakes from a simple civil war to hte end of the world. Aang on the other hand had a purpose from the very beginning unlike Korra.

Aang's purpose both had been on the table for 100 years and was everyone's major conflict.
Korra's problems were tied to Aang dealing with his problem. They were lesser problems overall because Aang ushered in an era of peace (albeit with underlying problems) The 2nd season started as "Evil spirits are running amok!" and that was it. Korra had to learn the underlying reason why there were dark spirits on her own. She wasn't released into a world with a global and monumental problem like Aang was.
And that was always another thing the show tried to touch on by escalating the problems;
We have an era of peace! Why do we need an Avatar? ->Something's wrong, but we can handle it! -> Oh shit, we can't handle it! AVATAR?!?
Also, we were left to presume that after Aang won, life would be like it was before the war. Korra had lasting effects on the world. Good or bad, it had the cajoles to change things in a world that obviously changed from our viewpoint of jumping from ATLA to LOK, but to the people in that world, was settling down in that peacetime and from that prosperity.

The first season of LOK may have been done right though. The second season however shat on the 10,000 year history of the Avatar. First season introduced a newbie to a modern world that was ushered in thanks to her previous incarnation, and there were real tangible problems plaguing that city of theirs, and she fixed it, good for her.

It really didn't need to be that way. Having a more modern setting and taking care of more modern problems would have been alright, instead we get modern setting and 10,000 year old grudge match between good and evil resulting in the severing of past incarnations of avatars to her and her future incarnations. Sure it'll never be the same, but is that for the good of all? The original plot of Avatar was that the Avatar was the bridge between the physical world and the spirit world, and that all goes down the drain because of what Korra did. It never needed to happen if the writers didn't write that piece of shit second season.

That Aang ending a war that lasted a hundred years, saving a continent from a genocide and ushering a brand new era of peace between all four nations is meaningless just because the world had to deal with different unrelated problems later? But that's also the point I was trying to make with the "Why do we need an Avatar?"
No matter how advanced that world becomes, it's hard to imagine it without bending. That world's history (bending, spirits, etc.) will be inseparably connected to whatever future comes about. Therefore, whenever a conflict arises that is connected to that history, it will need the Avatar to resolve it.

The modern problems might have been cool early on, but they would have run dry kinda quick. The only thing I can remember that was close to a modern problems was the mention of the gangs. But that doesn't sound like that could carry the show or at least keep our interest for long. Introducing change to the new-to-us-but-mundane-to-the-chararcters setting helps facilitate new ideas for stories, like bringing in the old world's elements (Not the 4 elements, but spirits and whatnot) into the new.

Eh, the UnaVaatu vs. Kaiju Korra, Jinora assist and possibly the "Raava can't be destroyed/dark can't exist without light" explanation were the only standout things IMO.
And just because Korra losing her connection to past Avatars might suck from a viewer's standpoint, that doesn't mean it's not an interesting concept from a creative position.

"Same person" gets tricky with reincarnation. Especially the Avatar's reincarnation where you can talk to your "other selves."
Aang is Roku in a sense, but not fully. Only Aang is truly Aang.
They're all their own person/soul/spirit/whatever, but Raava is what links them and what allows them to carry on past death. Humans can become spirits (The Painted Lady) but for a human spirit to be/stay in the spirit world is not easy. (Iroh, for example) So for a human spirit to be able to communicate with someone in their reincarnation line takes at least Raava to do so.

Zuko has been using rage to fuel his firebending and didn't have that drive anymore, I'm pretty sure it was addressed in the episode.

The ATLA "explanation" for how people obtained the power of bending never made sense anyways, even in-universe.

The idea that Lion Turtles gave people the power while the Moon/Badgers/Dragons/Bison taught them how to use it is... fine. It's awkward, isn't immediately obvious, and bending's origins should have been left a mystery,, but it's not an asspull.

You can't justify the ATLA lion turtle just because it showed up in a couple of pictures. Out of nowhere it completely resolves Aang's moral dilemma which should have been an opportunity for him to struggle and develop. It's just a device the writers invented so they could have their cake and eat it too

We saw Roku many times. Kyoshi twice (talked through Aang and spoke with him). Kuruk and Yangchen once.
It's obvious from The Old Masters that even though Aang became proficient in contacting past lives, you need to meditate deeper and concentrate harder to reach each following life.

Because he and Roku have more of a personal connection between each other. Since Roku was his previous incarnation, he gave Aang advice that helped him in his adventures. Unfortunately since Roku had a huge conflict with Sozin himself, Roku couldn't give Aang helpful advice on whether he should kill Ozai or not aside from "be decisive".

...I've been over this. Roku didn't know. Raava was not known in-universe during Aang's life. It's the same reasoning for the OP's question; They knew killing the Avatar in the Avatar State ended the cycle but no one in-universe knew the mechanics of why.
Because the knowledge of Raava fell out of known record and accessing deeper past lives is more difficult.

Super was made by the original creator several years after the original show had already ended and it too had contrived plots, lots of retcons and dumb characterizations. The people who liked DB/Z generally don't consider it canon because why the fuck would you attach something of such a low quality to the franchise you love? I mean one of the Avatar's fought and died to Koh to try and rescue his wife (or something to that effect).
We're supposed to believe he, along with thousand(s) of other avatars, has never deliberately maintained the Avatar State to try and win when everything that mattered to them was on the line (even though they couldn't)?

Anyway, the writers clearly just wanted to try and up the stakes in the final "fight" even though Aang already had the power to move mountains during the Avatar State and therefore should have won easily.
I mean the much better point about the Avatar State was that while in it, the Avatar loses himself to some cosmic force that rebalances the scales against whoever transgressed against the balance with murder.

Yeah, that was just dumb. Especially since when Aang talked to Roku in the series finale of ATLA, he only said to Aang that "he must be decisive" which was another way of him saying "do what you got to do but make the decision fast". He never implied to Aang that he should kill Ozai.

My main idea is that during the first go around the avatar kid is super traumatized from his near death experience and starts Goin Bananas and tried to overthrow all nations to stop all the wars. Eventually he is killed, the avatar cycle is broken. Instead of things ceasing the future!avatar goes to the moment where they lost their connection and posses their body for a bit. The new avatar has to placate their future self, and the future avatar learns to work through their trauma.
I was thinking this avatar could be a fire bender before the fire nation joined as one, during a warring period where the Earth nation was finally established. Maybe their death from the first go around was instigated from another tribe of fire benders or something.
The future avatar is killed by one of the members of the white lotus that was supposed to take care of them as a kid, so their super distrustful of the kid!avatars companions. And they can only manifest in smoke.

Jeez, maybe I should just rewatch avatar and stop wasting so much time on stupid what ifs

Yes, they do.
In fiction, canon is the material accepted as officially part of the story in the fictional universe of that story. It is often contrasted with, or used as the basis for, works of fan fiction.
Don't think "accepted" means what the fans accept. It's what the creators accept. And, even if it was, the majority of fans accept that Korra is canon. They may not like it, but it is.

Thought it's unclear if Wan actually learned to bend from the other sources or not or if he just sort of kept practicing stuff on his own, as we never see sky bison, badgermoles, or Tui and La in the montage from Beginnings.

I mean, Toph literally talks about how she learned the martial art of earthbending from badgermoles in a cave(alongside learning to use it as an extension of her senses), Oma and Shu's myth talks about them learning from badgermoles. Zuko and Aang find an ancient firebending form called "the Dancing Dragon" and do said form with actual dragons to convince them to teach them the original way of firebending, and then get visions in dragonfire.

Unlike our world, the origins of the martial arts of bending are sourced from the animals(or moon in the case of waterbending).

That's where it comes from. Many martial arts styles are named after animals. Toph also didn't literally learn from the badger moles she learned by observing them and copying they're movements. The same with the Dragon Dance. It's just a disciplined form of martial art and spirituality. Having one guy to explain the origins or start kills it. There's no one guy with these things. It's something that's crafted over centuries that people perfect over time.

She quite literally says that she was able to learn earthbending both as a martial art and as an extension of her senses from the badgermoles she met in the cave. That certainly means imitating their movements, because that's how you learn something.

That was learned from the dragons. Zuko do the ancient firebending form WITH Ran and Shaw and then are given more knowledge about firebending directly from the dragonfire visions.
