Angie gives him the pink pearl so he can pay Sykes more easily, yet Oscar deliberately goes to the racetrack to bet the pearl on the rigged horse and become rich. This was changed in the movie. There, Sykes gives Oscar 24 hours to pay and tells him to meet up at the racetrack tomorrow, Angie gives him the pearl, Oscar goes to the racetrack to pay Sykes and only bets the money spontaneously when he overhears some guys talking about how the race is rigged. It's not much, but it's an improvement.
