Warring states period post the collapse of the Republic. There are good guys, bad guys, pirates, privateers, sheriffs, outlaws, smugglers, bounty hunters, warlords, kings, tyrants, rebels, jedi knights, sith remnants, nobles, merchants, cults, and the Force.
You can drop a plot about a major incursion at the heart of the conflict or a minor adventure on the fringes. Everything's so fucked that there won't be a unified galactic council for centuries. But nobody has enough power yet for a major force to threaten the galaxy, so most conflicts are brief power grabs, simmering border conflicts, local campaigns, or temporary coalitions tearing down an expansionist regional power to force the release of vassal worlds. There are overlapping and contradictory alliances throughout the remnants of the Republic, but with a few exceptions, any alliance is transient and conditional on continued mutual benefit.
Also something something new tech applied to fleets and planets force local ships to travel super slow (relatively, space is big) to prevent hyper-speed collisions. All the better to justify dogfights and unfuck that bit of the canon.
