What are some good romances in comics and cartoons? More importantly, why do you think they're good? I'd give an example, but I honest to god can't think of anything and I'm on the verge of existential crisis because of it.

Dragon Prince as series is a bit wonky, but I respect it for exploring a bit of romance that didn't have to wait until the last episode to be established.

Ben and Gwen's evolution from bratty pre-teen rivals to superhero lovers has always been a favorite of mine. There's a lot of character growth built into their eventual relationship and, they compliment eachother well. I think that's the most important thing really, the characters have to have chemistry, a level of rapport that can't be seen in their interactions with other characters.
You know that abstract concept of a "spark" that normies talk about? Well in a fictional setting, you can imply that with all sorts of directorial tricks and I think that was done really well with Ben and Gwen.

Helga and Arnold in Hey Arnold, even if it is largely one-sided. That longing is real and speaks to me in ways few other cartoons have. Underlying it all is a genuine hope, rather than the fleeting satisfaction of easy consummations. It's full of moments that transcend shipping and romance, becoming a love not of individuals, but of humanity and goodness.
A very close second is Wall-E and Eve. It's not that their relationship is particularly special, but it's the craft of the storytelling. It's Pixar at its best.

I wish I could watch Dragon Prince. The elf girl looks super cute and I love how she talks, but the visuals of that show give me a fucking headache.
Does it start looking better in the newer seasons?

Don't know if I'd call it a successful romance per se, but Helga was a genuinely great character. "Tsundere" is generally a terrible story trope, but Helga's story worked because she was a child trying to figure out her emotions at a confusing age. She was only nine and came from a dysfunctional family that didn't listen, and reacted so strongly to being teased by bullies that she became one.

I really regret that we never got that pitched sequel spin-off where she and her family were the main characters, dealing with life after Arnold moved away.

OP wanted a good romance, and I think we all wanted Helga to have a successful romance, and that's how we know it's great. For all of her flaws, everyone who has watched this show is squarely on her side. There are good healthy cartoon couples, there are cartoons that frame romance as conquest, wooing, or love at first sight. But those are all boring to me, it's for pretty and blessed people. Helga's romantic struggle is engaging.

like think of most romances, you can guess what the other person likes about each other right? like in aladdin, you know that jasmine likes aladdin because he represents freedom and respects her. and he likes her because she's outspoken and represents a life he aspires to.

don't iron out every character flaw and make them perfect. this is mostly seen in 'representation' gay couples written by well meaning heteros. but at the same time, if they like each other, they need to show some actual pleasure at each other's company.

To be fair, unless you start posting the parents of protagonists you're not going to find too many examples of good couples since cartoons are aimed at children, and authors don't necessarily want to push romance on kids too early. Media focused at boys will ESPECIALLY avoid romance, while media aimed at girls will zoom in on it.

There's a lot of cute couples in Winx Club but the show itself is aimed at girls. Same with Miraculous, it's aimed at girls.
Jessie and James are practically a married couple even though pokemon is technically anime, and fags want to hoard James for themselves for some reason.
