Outside of one or two brief tongue mentions there was no "monsters are really oppressed minorities" shit. Ponyhead was in very few episodes. Marco actually had friends. Star had Brittney, an enemy she couldn't just blast away. The animation was better at least for the first half, and characters were generally more expressive. They didn't overwhelm the show with cancerous lore shit, hints dropped here and there and built up to a final episode that was excellent and set the stage for season 2.
Season 2 was Nefcy rebelling against the Disney executives and gutting half of the cast just to make a revolving door of one-shots and lamer characters. It had a better seasonal story arc with Ludo but otherwise there were a lot of bad, BAD filler episodes sprinkled in between. Remember Hildawg?
