Asian Americans are seen as complacent minorities that don’t need to be “appeased” in the same way as African Americans and Hispanic Americans out of model minority portrayals. They spin stereotypes as being positive while also making them things to strive for, so you never get shocking ideas such as “attractive Asian male” or “non-socially awkward Asian character”. Old tropes like Dragon Ladies still exist deep down, and people can’t help but exoticize these characters and basically treat them like they’re anime girls come to life or whatever. It’s a balancing act of trying not to write Fu Manchu while also trying to “justify” their existence, which seems to frequently involve making them socially awkward technically adept martial artists with streaks in their hair
