The Elite didn't think they were right because they were the strongest, they thought that they were right because they used their strength without holding back. Superman just shows them how immoral and degrading power exercised without restraint is and that a "hero" should be someone with a moral code to aspire to, not just someone who can blow up "baddies" and make a two-page splash panel in the process.

Pretty much, Joker only exists because of status quo. Due to his sheer body count and the fact that he constantly gets away with it with only a few month stint in Arkham as punishment it's a real big stretch that no vigilante or cop hasn't just killed him.
