Something I never got about "The Simpsons" is why the show portrays Edna as being pathetic and undesirable. Am I alone in thinking this is BS? She's a foxy older lady who's witty, sarcastic, and intelligent. Her being depressed and world-wary are presented as some kind of deal-breaker even though she doesn't seem like a bad person beneath her abrasive demeanor. I can't speak for everyone but I wouldn't find any of that unappealing.

Who are some other characters like this (IE, supposedly unappealing but not really)? I'd say something similar of Patty and Selma. Putting aside their indifference towards presenting themselves well, they're just slightly chubbier versions of Marge.
