But as to the "peer reviewed research," the jury's not out yet. And anyway, as much as people hate to admit it, psychology is a subject still in its infancy. The DSM changes every year, and the field hasn't even fixed half of the problems it has set out to solve. There's no reliable cure for alchoholism, depression etc.
Maybe in a few years when they've managed to solve the high suicide rate. Or been able to explain why there's such comorbidity between gender dysphoria and other psychological problems.
(Problems, by the way, that can't be explained by "they're under more pressure from society." You can't "get" bipolar disorder or "get" schizophrenia. These are things you are born with, and anyway, if it was really society's fault, then you'd see a lot more black people killing themselves, and they aren't.) Or maybe once they can come up with a coherent definition of what "gender" is... who can do better than just say, like all intelligent liars, "but what IS truth? But how can I be lying... if the truth is not REAL?"
Maybe after that, but not until then.
Oh right, you asked me what the truth was. The truth is that there are two sexes: men and women. And you can whittle their definitions down to a bare nub, just as you can Socratic-dialogue any word into meaninglessness. But humans are only evolved to reproduce in a single way, and will be until we perfect human cloning.
The existence of outliers like hermaphrodites doesn't change this. And any way, the vast majority of transgender people aren't hermaphrodites
