It's way too much production for a mediocre product. The heist episode did not need THAT many aliens, barely anyone noticed that aspect. They could have reused assets and nobody would have noticed it.

I remember listening to one of the simpsons audio commentaries, I think it was for season 5 (It was the episode that started with the pool truck) and how an earthquake happened in LA over the summer and delayed production for a month and the animator commented on a moment when bart was getting off the counch and was stuck a little bit so he had to peel himself off before getting up. This is like that but sadder because its the writers themselves constantly holding up production

I think the show should seriously just stop using vector puppets and get one of the outsourcing studios that does frame-by-frame animation to animate the show instead. It's quite obvious in the video that the puppet-based nature of the show is growing to be a hindrance to the animation team's growing ambitions. It's not like they don't have the budget now to outsource the animation to a frame-by-frame studio. The only sacrafices I think they would have to make are in regards to the big crowd shots that have tons of unique aliens in them.

Why do you idiots still glorify hand-drawn, frame-by-frame animation as if it's The Right Way™ to animate a cartoon? It still takes a lot of skill and dedication to design and build functional rigs that can emote in versatile ways, especially when hundreds of new ones need to be made per episode.

If you guys could finally put it through your thick skulls that the animation medium can tackle all kinds of animation approaches, you'd see that there's more styles to appreciate than just '90s style superhero action and 2D Disney-esque animation. The anons here who shit on 2D puppet rigs sound just as misguided as those crusty old animation professors who shat on anime throughout the 20th century.

Get off your high horse. Puppet rigs can look cheap and lazy like on Johnny Test, or they can look super lively and expressive like on Wander Over Yonder, Final Space, or Rick and Morty. The same applies to frame-by-frame; there's the good and the bad. It's all about what you do with your technique.

I don't know the specifics about the general cost of TV animation, but I feel like the respective budgets for most major hand-drawn and tweened cartoons would balance out.

Hand-drawn abuses the lower costs of overseas (typically South Korean) studios, but the amount of sheets used for the animation might still take a big chunk out of the budget since all frames need to be accounted for. Tweens abuse the technique of reusing rigs and assets, but I'm pretty sure Canadian/American/French/Irish animators are paid better than South Koreans PLUS each crew member requires the digital drawing equipment and the animation program(s) necessary to do their part.

Both techniques likely cost around the same, each with their own specific pros and cons. Also, you can't try to prove your point by dismissing puppet animation as "cheap schlock."

All their bragging about their animation process in service of a cynical, unfunny show. In comparison Superjail was crude and regularly off-model but I watched the hell out of that show because it knew what it was and where the comedy came from. I'm an animator and I use Toon Boom. It's tedious to set up rigs and nodes and all that shit so the least they could do is make that hard work pay off with a good story. Remember when Adult Swim wanted this to be their big family sitcom to rival FOX? 5 episodes in and that dream seems like nonsense.

Vector based animation is a good way to do a comedy show, because the animation process itself is relatively simple and easy to do.
You can make vector based animation look good while still not burning a shit ton of money and time working on it.
The advantage of doing it for comedy specifically is that you want to laugh at it, so you're not going to be focused on how good it is artistically. It's cheap and nobody's gonna give you shit for it unless it's outrageously bad, because people weren't expecting it to be good in the first place.
You don't have to aim for new heights every time you start anew. Do your funny visual gags but don't dedicate attention where you don't need it.

Toonboom is easy as fuck to use once you get it, and the z-depth/autopatch make it far faster than flash even if you're not dealing with rigs but are doing pure FBF (and the node system allows you to stack effects/do need compositing stuff too).

I agree that Jam Filled and Mercury Filmworks are two of the best studios doing puppet animation, but Bardel still does great work on Rick and Morty. That crying WebM isn't choppy at all and has a real nice smoothness to the character's movement. Tweened animation doesn't necessarily have to be BOUNCY to be "good," though that is one of the best uses of this technique.

Not the industry anon you're replying to, but I'm pretty sure Post-Its are typically used for thumbnails (rough, first-pass storyboards) before getting cleaned up and handed off to the revisionists.

Most--if not all--cartoons are boarded digitally, but it's mainly scripted shows that have boards as clean as Family Guy's.

What they do in R&M though is a problem because they seem to make a fuckton of new rigs for crowds that change on all the crazy species they have. Sure there are some reuse of other species (like basic humans converted to aliens with antennas/different skin color), but above that you get crazy designs which eat up so much time in rigging.

Once you do have all the rigs and setup then animating them isn't super difficult since you can recycle the animation.

That's part of it called the node view. It allows you to set up scenes/puppets/effects/compositing/etc through plugging things in many different ways. There is still a stage and timeline/library/etc too.
