That's basically how criticism works. If you like GD Esther, that's fine, I guess a lot of people do.
It just doesn't really feel like a natural growth for the character.
I suppose you could argue that Esther also went through a radical transformation between her first few appearances and what would later become her core personality, but I'm more forgiving of that, because she was new and wasn't developed yet.
The Giant Days issues I've read basically had the cast go, "Oh look at what wacky thing Esther is doing THIS week," making her feel more like a plot device than a character.
Even when the plot is about her, like when her TA boyfriend is a twat or she learns to not blow off religion class from a hip, down to earth reverend, it doesn't feel like she exists as a character.
That's not to say that she's all bad now: she was good when she was explaining a bit about relationships to Ed and Daisy. That was good.
