>>114124545The Rubies aren’t romantic, despite one having a crush on Lapis. They Fused as a team to accomplish their job, like any team of coworkers who have to act as a group to get shit done. Notice how Eyeball has no problems abandoning them, and only two remained together but still just for the purpose of a job.
Flourite is a romantic Fusion, but we never got a clue about Rhodonite. Based on their whole personality and the subtle body language like the Pearl arms comforting the Ruby ones when they were afraid and the Ruby arms trying to protect Paddy when they were all in danger, they may be more trauma survivors who maintain close friendships with each other lifelong such as war veterans or abused children than romantic.
Steven and Connie formed a Fusion based on friendship and playing together, they haven’t even Fused as a romantic couple yet onscreen. Steg is the manifestation of how Steven and Greg see each other (hence “Guitar Dad” body).
We saw how Rainbow changed between Steven and Rose. Rainbow 1.0 is a romantic visual, with Pearl’s eyes giving a smirking expression at having managed to “claim Rose” but is mostly made up of Pearl despite Rose being the one most in control. Rainbow 2.0 is mostly Steven, and Pearl’s eyes are observers that give off a proud expression, the same one she gives when watching Steven do things like act or sing.
In the end, all Fusions are just “this is the embodiment of their relationship together. Sex, love, monogamy, comfort, being in a shit job and having to pretend you like each other, a proud parent with their child, or kicking ass together.
