>>113665512The Bible says a lot of things that relatively progressive given the time period. There's the bit in one of Paul's epistles that says "A woman should learn in silence and submission." While the rest of the quote from that passage (1 Timothy 2:11) goes on about not teaching or holding authority and most people latch onto that or in silence and submission, the caveat that most people like to gloss over is that Paul says that women should learn at all in a time where educating women was generally seen as a waste of time.
It also gives an eye for an eye, meant to limit cycles of revenge and just punishment. Also giving us. There's also the requirement in Jewish wartime law that the proper procedure for taking a female slave as a consort is to wait until the campaign is over, then take her clothes, shave her head and then wait a month. The alternative practiced by similar groups in the day was to simply rape her and kill her at your leisure.
Then there's the "No Jew nor Greek" and everyone is equal in Christ.
What people tend to forget about the Bible is that it was written hundreds of years ago. They judge based on the text alone and completely neglect social moors of the time where this might actually be progressive. Not to mention people just plain ignoring context. That isn't to say it doesn't say some backwards stuff, but take what you can get.
