The real answer lies somewhere between the two. There's probably not a lot that Bernie could convince black people on, especially when you look at his most active campaign participants. You're going to have a hard time sending pasty college kids out to tell black people how they know what's best for them, etc.
In a world where you really only get to pick two people for president, you either vote very specifically for your personal interests and don't win because that's too niche or you go for someone you feel will be most generally agreeable on your party. Bernie isn't that person, despite his online presence.
