When you look at older films from the '60s-'80s you'll often find that the fullscreen versions hold way more visual information, despite these films being 1.85:1 in theaters. This is because, while those films were framed for widescreen, they "protected" the full frame for fullscreen TV. BD publishers usually go for the theatrical wide ratio despite this.
