Assuming this is New York, assault can go from third-degree assault which is a simple misdemeanor punishable with a fine and up to one year of jail to first-degree assault which is a violent felony with 5 to 25 years of jail as punishment.
Like all other crimes there's a lot of factors (seriousness of injuries, use of weapon, precedents of the accused, etc ...) that affect the sentencing.
