I don't think you necessarily need a huge expensive tablet with a screen. I've tried one of those once, and it felt kinda awkward to me. Maybe it might get easier to use in time, but I just didn't get the same sort of instantly intuitive feeling from it as I got when I tried out my very first tablet. My personal opinion is that smaller tablets feel nicer to use, and that my oldest/cheapest model was the most comfortable one I had.
Anyway, my point is that you don't have to even look at the $1000 tablets just yet. For a person with no previous experience with tablets, some popular but cheap entry-level model would work better.
