Line-wide events kind of got started with Shooter's Secret Wars in 1985 in the sense that he forced pretty much every main title to acknowledge it in some way through some story arc. Some did so more than others, of course like with Spider-Man's alien costume. Secret Wars II was a true line-wide event where you had to follow the story around different titles. But they also experimented with other formats for events before settling on the current one. In the late 80s they did "Annual events" where the Annual issues crossed over with each other to tell a story but not the main books (examples being stuff like Atlantis Attacks). Then Infinity Gauntlet brought the line-wide crossover back for a while before it trickled off into a bunch of smaller, isolated ones like Zero Tolerance and maximum Security.
The first "Modern" event comic was House of M.
