>>112527350>I'm not sure what the movie wants us to take away from all this. That's because the movie doesn't actually have a message. Its just good at pretending it has one and holding up screencaps of other, more reknown works to cover its tracks as it makes its way towards the finish line.
Like, the whole basis of the film wants to be about how Arthur was fucked over by society until it broke him and thats why he went crazy... except he is legitimately mentally ill and has been for a long time. He has a family history of grandiose delusions and and mental unwellness, he was *always going to be crazy* regardless of how he was treated by society. How he was treated by society just made things worse, it didn't actually cause the problem.
And the whole riot that springs up in his image comes out of nowhere and frankly doesn't spring from his accomplishments or goals in any way. Its just a free win dropped on him out of the sky to make it seem like what he is doing means something by painting it as being accepted by this violent mob.
Its all set pieces that seem like they should be part of a story where these things are connected and resolve to a theme, but if you actually think about the text on any level there is fucking nothing stringing these things together. Its like watching a bunch of geico commercials in a row and convincing yourself you saw a movie about a gecko.
