They were just obsessed with lore and did a JJ Abrams at every opportunity. If they'd really intended for a slow burn, they'd have been more than that one scene. But fans saw more than the writers did and the writers jumped to please them.
I saw that in SU too. The writers leave the JJ Abrams moments vague enough that anything will fit and then they pick their favourite fan theory and pretend that it was a clever twist.
