What are some capeshit series that rise above the rest of em? I'm pretty new to the genre, so I'm looking for some good recommendations and why they're good if it's not too much to ask.

All-Star Superman - Fun, weird adventures and would make a decent ending to the Superman character. Great art.

Spider-Man: Life Story - Does a good job of taking a lot of Spider-Man's iconic stories and events from each decade since 1962 and reimagines them as if the Marvel Universe didn't work on a sliding timescale and Peter grew old.

>Runs

Grant Morrison's Animal Man - More weird adventures, very creative uses of superpowers. Meta stuff/fourth wall breaking before it got really played out. Ending is satisfying after the build up.

The president planned his assassination. He plans to have Captain Atom bring him back to life like with the dog, thus reigniting people's hope in superheroes and starting a new golden age. There's also an element of him wanting to atone for killing his father.

Seconding the anon that suggested Miller's Daredevil run, then. Possibly Tom King's Miracle Man for something contemporary. It isn't the best there is, but it'll be a nice palate cleanser. Look into Spider-Man: Blue. Superman: For All Seasons, too. These aren't best in their class necessarily (though quite good,) but entries into certain things that can lead to further appreciation of Big 2 stuff.

Mike Grell's run of GA is what I consider something truly special. Most Grant Morrison and Alan Moore works are a sure bet, but the former is a bit heavy on meta-narrative. Tackle those when you're a bit more familiar. One of my favorite stories is For the Man Who Has Everything, both in animated and comic form, but I can't recommend it from the jump.

Into Shamballa is another one that falls into that camp. So start with strong basics. To reiterate but also add on:

Miller Daredevil
Spider-Man: Blue
Superman: For all Seasons
Mike Grell's Green Arrow
Dennis O'Neil's Question
Alan Moore's Swamp Thing
Original Hellblazer run.
Grant Morrison's Animal Man.

If you liked Spectacular, you should read Amazing Fantasy 15 and then Amazing Spider-Man 1-350. The old timey writing can be hard to get past, but once you warm to the style you’ll be fine.

You'll find these are mentioned in many places, but it's for a good reason. I would argue that some of the comics mentioned here (such as Animal Man, Starman and Suicide Squad) and those that haven't been mentioned yet (such as Superman: Secret Identity, Doom Patrol, DC: The New Frontier and Miracle Man) are top cape comics, but they don't rise above the rest. Some of the above won't be fully effective if you aren't used the genre at least a little bit.
Ignore any praise for Tom King.

"What's So Funny About Truth, Justice and the American Way?" aka Action Comics 772. Adapted as the animated short film "Superman vs The Elite." Haven't seen the movie adaptation so I can't speak to its quality, good or bad.

It's not a "series." It's a one-shot, but it's so exceptionally good I'd feel bitter if I missed an opportunity to post about it here. Especially since you seem to like Hitman. This kind of plays on some of the same themes and dynamics as Superman's appearance in that series.

Without getting into spoilers, it's essentially a deconstruction/exploration of the Garth Ennis style Anti-Hero vs the "dated, antiquated, silly" Superman and the ideological struggle between them, and an examination of why Superman refuses to kill. It takes the interesting, unexplored and vulnerable elements of Capeshit and uses them to tell an exceptional story.

It was pretty much a straight-up response to Garth Ennis (the villain is a British, trenchcoat-clad anti-hero in a union jack shirt) but sadly, in today's modern Clown World, it feels more like a sincere "Fuck You" to Zack Snyder, Benis Bendis and other people who try to turn capeshit into super serious, gritty soap operas that pretend to be subversive when they're not.

That's off the top of my head. There's a lot to like. I will say that I prefer DC's style of storytelling to Marvel's over the years, especially nowadays. There's a lot of bad to wade through with both companies, but DC is of more consistent quality. Still, for capestuff, it's best to dip into both camps to get the most out of it.
