Also one of the big problems is literally everyone knows all the basics about Batman and Superman.
The mythology stuff they've been pushing so hard has ironically just caused more confusion, because now you have classic Wonder Woman and new Wonder Woman.
This is why even for comics, movies and TV shows are important, because most writers aren't going to be arsed to read an actual run of any character anymore. They need an easy to digest version that communicates the character in 22 minutes or less.
This is why Azzarello's run is such a problem for classic fans: because it was actually a pretty damn good comic that communicated its vision for the character immediately and had really good, distinctive art, everyone who followed DC was reading it at the time, and so that version of the character stuck with people more than versions that are meant for the longtime fans and respect the entire history of the character.
Same with Hawkeye around the same time. Pretty much no one knew anything about Hawkeye because they'd have to go back and read Avengers runs from the 70's and 80's for that, so that Fraction version will be the one everyone goes back to for the rest of eternity.
