Inpatient does not necessarily help and I never go any more when I'm suicidal, but one thing they really can do is provide a fairly boring environment away from your family with a lot of time to journal, and get you on some psych drugs if that is what you want. If that sounds appealing to you you can try to go.
Partial hospitalization, which they sometimes discharge to after inpatient, has more actual therapy-type stuff. Honestly, what I would recommend is making sure you have a therapist who doesn't suck, and calling a crisis line in the meantime. If you dislike the counselor's style, hang up and try a different one. I used to work at one and they don't worry too much about whether you're in their area or whatever.
