How do we reboot G.I Joe besides not letting IDW hire a literal communist that made fun of 9/11 survivors on twitter to write a GI Joe reboot? GI Joe never worked as an international team besides Sigma six. If they had to be international shouldn’t Hasbro look at the call of duty games for inspiration? Original GI Joe cartoon aired during the Cold War era, when there was a lot more patriotism and militarism and fear about communism. It might take a similar geopolitical situation to make GI Joe popular again. As much as I love GI Joe, if that's what it takes it probably isn't worth it!
Military things are really only acceptable for adults now, but since GI Joe started as a kid's thing it's in a sort of gray area where they can't push the violence too much (they can in the comics, I guess, since parents probably aren't really aware of those and I think it's mainly adults reading them).

not really, it's exactly the kind of shiny coat of paint GI Joe needs in this day and age, it should be pretty obvious at this point that as much as a lot of people want otherwise, trying to do GI Joe as something gritty in the vein of Larry Hama's comics just isn't going to work these days anywhere besides comics(for one thing CoD and other games of it's ilk have that market cornered and Joe trying to copy it will just come off as pathetic in comparison), it just doesn't lend itself to selling toys or making a successful cartoon, GI Joe has to embrace a lighter tone, at least from an aesthetics point

besides I'm not saying copy Overwatch 1:1, but rather take note of the aspects of it that helped it become the hit it is, and then apply those to GI Joe to help it become relevant and profitable once more

IIRC early on, the only book IDW had that anyone gave a fuck about, was the Cobra/Chuckles books. Just do that but instead of making it grim fucking dark, just go full comedy/farce as far as embracing the long-held fan theory that Cobra is an office workplace comedy that just so happens to have, as the workplace, a terrorist group out to conquer the earth.

You can't go comedy because once you take a franchise full-on into farce and it's a huge hit, you can't fucking go back and expect people to take the property seriously ever again. See Space Ghost, Birdman, Sealab, Johnny Quest, and all of the Hannah Barbara properties that are irrevocably damaged when they let Mike Lazzo revamp them as comedic parodies.

Also, going heavy on Cobra ended up backfiring on IDW in the early days. They killed Cobra Commander and did "Cobra Civil War", which was less Cobra Civil War and more Cobra's top guys killing dozens of GI Joe characters in a grim dark farce that ended with an OC Vietnamese guy winning and getting the right to be the new Cobra Commander.

Rainbow Six Siege is GI Joe all but in name at this point. It's a well-known secret that Hasbro is incompetent as fuck when it comes to handling most of their properties. They should've been capitalizing on the success of modern shooters as soon as it started getting fuckin popular. They could've been cutting deals with Activision to have GI Joe characters in COD by this point. Hell BO4 has a fuckin military ninja character!

They're scared nowadays due to the stigmata associated with a franchise that centers on military and warfare but people still eat that shit up. There's plenty of military writers out there who'd probably love to try writing a JOE story, they should be looking for them instead of the anti-military dumbasses they hire. Play into the market instead of against it.

Problem is that EVERYTHING has to appeal globally these days and thanks to Bush II's foreign wars, the US military isn't exactly popular over in Europe and Asia.

Adding to this, they tried a "compromise" by aping what was done in the late 80s with GI Joe (where, as Action Force, they simply imported the US Joe figures and changed their bios so everyone on the GI Joe team was from the UK or Australia) for Rise of Cobra, which backfired huge and damn near killed the franchise.

Also, Cobra is a millstone around the franchise's neck. No one at Hasbro wants to deal with the PR nigtmare of half your cast being a full-on terror group in this day and age with Al Quaeda and ISIS. But Cobra is too fucking popular and worse, most of their toy sales comes from people buying the various Cobra goon squad (Troopers, Vipers) figures. And fans won't fucking tolerate having Cobra expunged from the franchise; see how badly sales for Devil Dues GI Joe comic tanked whenever they tried to replace Cobra or do stories in the main book, with non-Cobra villains.

Ultimately it is a military vs. terrorists franchise. You can lean in to the sci-fi aspects to make it more acceptable to children but once it stops being military vs. terrorists it stops being recognizable as GI Joe and might as well just be a whole different thing.

Christ, I hated that shit. Even beyond the "have the Joes constantly make the most retarded decisions possible in order to make sure as many Joes as possibly will die horribly," the whole New Cobra Commander thing was a pointless wet fart. Oh wow, instead of the faceless and mysterious Cobra Commander, another established character will lead Cobra! Who willl it b---oh, it's the new, more obnoxious faceless and mysterious guy, so absolutely nothing has changed as far as story structure goes. If I had to describe that series in two words, it'd be "miserable" and "pointless."

Remember that Small Soldiers movie? It was meant to be subversive propaganda where the warlike toxic masculine soldier toys were actually the bad guys and the peaceful native monsters were the good guys being persecuted. It's a grey area because kids are not supposed to be playing it. It's ostensibly aimed at adults. Maybe parents don't care, maybe kids play while their parents are at work, whatever. It's different than a cartoon and action figure franchise which started out as a kid's thing.

First off, if you want the toys to sell, just make them as cool as the 90s ones. I didn't know a lot of those characters but got them for the cool looks alone, they blow MCU or Ben10 figures out of the water for instance.

As for the cartoon, don't get too militaristic, don't get continuity heavy, have them. Have the Joes chilling and stuff. Some episodes like the craziest on the first cartoon.
Also, keep them an international force, yeah. Makes it easier to explain them dealing with Cobra shenanigans around the globe.

Yeah, Cobra is the coolest thing about it. And terrorists obviously existed when the cartoon first aired, they were hijacking planes and killing people, sure 9/11 hadn't happened but terrorists were still real and bad and no one cared if Cobra were terrorists because they were the bad guys! GI Joe is synonymous with military, it's in the name, GI, General Infantry, unless we're gonna redefine it as Genetically Ionized and make them superheroes or something. We have enough superhero stuff, we should be able to have one army guy franchise. Too bad it can't just become solely aimed at adults but I can't think of a case where a kid's franchise has totally rebranded as being for grown ups only. Even in Overwatch people have guns and stuff so I guess that angle could work but trying to turn it into solely a superhero thing and remove all military aspects will not work.

You're kinda hitting on why Cobra is so endearing to people. They're not terrorists in the classic sense, they're supervillains with some real world political elements attached. That's how you should play up GI Joe for modern audiences, it's a ragtag group of military professionals coming together to fight fight a worldwide supervillain group with a literal army of thematically dressed goons.

One idea i had for Cobra Commander is reimaging him as a super soldier ala The Winter Soldier, bio-engineered by like Dr. Mindbender under Serpentor's orders to be the face of Cobra while Serpentor rules from the shadows.

However initially Cobra Commander is seen as a cold vicious fighter and field commander as the story progresses he becomes more erratic and more mentally unstable and unhinged. I want him to be someone who could be goofy but still a legitimate threat.

also I had the idea that Major Bludd and Metalhead (yeah that doofus from the DIC GI Joe series) are the only ones that seem to actually be genuinely loyal to CC rather than Serpentor or Destro or the other higher ups.

CC and everyone else hating him would make a lot more sense if he wasn't the big one in-charge. plenty of in house fighting and drama as always what people enjoy from Cobra and our beloved terrorist is still the underdog.

Their base, the Pit, is basically a small subterranean city so that the men and women of the team don't go completely insane from isolation.
