Couple of questions to all anime experts here. My story starts in Japan and moves to USA. Japan isn't really a focus of the story, so don't want to go full in aesthetically, but i still want some semblance of culture. Story involves japanese corporate culture, most of the dialogues are between two former friends who are now in complicated boss-employee relationship with occasional glad-hand and favors.
Should i use honorific suffixes?
Should i use words like sir or mister?
Would they call each other by their first or last name?
Are there any specific slurs for americans?

>>111365019 >Thread question: How much author appeal do you put in your comic? Do you think there is such a thing as putting in too much of it, making the comic appeal only to the author's very specific tastes? I make it purely my thing and don't try to appeal to anyone specific, even if that keeps my audience small. If you want quick popularity you should shed part of yourself if necessary to make a project that resonates well with the mainstream audiences, but that is not something I endorse.

You want a massively popular comic then you either scratch an itch people didn't realise they had or go for the lowest common denominator. But remember -- if you make a comic to your own tastes, you still need to find a way to get similar-minded people to hear about your comic. And just because you're willing to sell out, doesn't mean people are willing to buy.

I've always said that Tad Danger is a personal pet project.
However i have pretty cool tastes, so i dont think it will be too niche, and i try to run the gamut with my humor to appeal to everyone.
I assume if its funny to me, it should be funny to most people.

Yeah, Percy is a huge tomboy and isn't big on clothes especially when Thule don't wear clothes in their own environment. But her feminine idysocrosies come through with her hair. She constantly changes which is relatively easy for her since her telekinesis means she can set it however she likes whenever she likes.
If she's ever in a fighting game her alt costumes are all her different hair styles.
You did Percy justice. You even got her Fishermen crest. It's a littttttle too lewd for me to want to share on my fanart updates, but if you ever want to just draw Percy I'd share it.

CapeworldComics !118LTnv3DE
>>111376693 It's frozen after harvesting which reduces it in size to about a baseball. Eating it is sort of like eating egg yolk crossed with ice cream. Thule etiquette says that you're supposed to puncture the eye and then use the juices to flavor the surrounding cuts of meat to taste. The juices have a light salty taste.
It's not bad at all to taste especially when mixed with the meat, but it's still a big eyeball staring up at you from your plate.

CapeworldComics !118LTnv3DE
>>111377201 >Suddenly remember water expands when it freezes because of its molecular structure Fucking water.
The dodge is that the Nepots Ocean where Thule live is really, REALLY deep underground where pressures are so intense you can't actually have water. The closest you can get is hydroxide molecules in ringwoodite. What the Nepots Ocean is is an ocean of ringwoodite that sometimes liquifies under the pressure of all the Thule and giant monsters and telekinetic fields moving around but is mostly solid as a rock. It only looks like water because Thule eyes are strong enough to move it around and because its bright blue (isn't ringwoodite pretty?)
So Kraken blood, and the blood of other beings within the Nepots Ocean such as Thule, has very little actual water. It's more like liquid silicon.
>Holy fuck Otto all that to explain a Kraken eyeball shrinking when its frozen? Naw, I was thinking about making the Nepots Ocean ringwoodite since I learned about it looking up subterranean water.
>Otto I don't think you can consume something that's mostly liquid silicon... Yes. Yes you can. It's uh...well it just is safe! Something something multiversal interference.

CapeworldComics !118LTnv3DE
>>111378157 >>111378215 Hm...come to think of it now ringwoodite is mostly magnesium...so allowing for similar biological processes to occur in both surface creatures and those in the Nepots Ocean and some writer fiat, Kraken blood would be similar to magnesium citrate.
That means the kraken eyeball would taste...fruity. It would be like a very weird orange sherbert.
>But doesn't that mean you run the risk of hypermagnesemia if you ate it? I do not know.

I'm working on getting some practice with smaller mini-comics in before I try and create a larger comic story, but there are a few story ideas I have tossed around and I'm not sure which one to work on. You anons mind giving me your thoughts on which one I should continue with?> 1) Urban Fantasy where the internet connects people enough that there's enough mental power to potentially change reality (for example, if a persons online profile is popular enough and enough people know about it, they can persist as a 'ghost' even after death - but their online persona influences what the ghost acts like) > 2) Sci-Fi Mythopic structured like a series of traditional myths ala Greek, Celtic, Indigenous, etc religions. Humans play a significant role in the mythos as they're the only species that will always die (old age). General themes of accepting death and how violence is innate to the world but can still be overcome. >3) Post-Apocalyptic Wierd where the entire world is covered in a thick layer of giant dead bugs/arthropods, but things get less normal and less dead the further down the layer things go. >>111394367 Nope, cant get sick nor poisoned either. A big deal in the story is Tamamo developing a poison that actually works on them. They are VERY difficult to kill unless you gang on them and behead OR use a demon-hunter weapon.

I like trying to figure out ways to defeat OP powers like healing factors or time stop, etc. Best one I have is a radiation flash, which essentially shatters your DNA, and kills you by causing not just cellular death, but the inability for cells to even reproduce.
Could totally defeat sci-fi healing factors, but Oni magic healing factors, probably not. I doubt DNA is even a factor in Oni healing.
Ardi
>>111394833 Yep, a constant acid bath would work wonders eventually. And no I dont think DNA matters, its a sort of location-soul-magic using an external power source.
Getting ready for the most gory catfight ever I see. Also this reminds me of a group of villains with OP powers I had in some other story (teleportation, intangibility, time-stop, creation, and literally winning), thinking about ways for the heroes to beat them was real fun.

>>111365019 >Thread question: How much author appeal do you put in your comic? Do you think there is such a thing as putting in too much of it, making the comic appeal only to the author's very specific tastes? My comics are essentially passion projects. How do copyrights and trademarks work? Do you need to do something or it just is what it is after a certain release?
Smacky Jackson
>>111426593 copyrights are automatic. you already have it if its somewhere with a provable date. so pretty much the moment its online.
trademarks are trickier and honestly not something you need to worry about. that is mostly for logos, names and other such things primarily used for merchandising.

>>111442184 >>111442259 Thanks! I got some other projects to finish writing but I badly want to do more writing with her. There's lots of interesting ways to explore Percy's character--Thule culture, the Fisherman legacy, the pressure women place on themselves to both subvert and conform to gender rules, her as a parole officer for superhumans, etc, etc. She's like the Batman or X-men of my superhero universe, she's got a nice corner all to herself and adjacent characters.
I really want to write her family--her mom who is a super-nice healer but hates that her daughter is abandoning the family's tradition of female healers, her brother who is a chill prison guard even more powerful than Percy is , her father who coordinates Fisherman missions, lots of cool stuff.
I don't want her mom to just be this angry bitch mad that her daughter is a tomboy. I want it to be more complicated than that. So she's sort of jealous of her husband because both their kids took after his human legacy. She was fine with her son being a Fisherman and assumed Percy would just naturally take after her, but now that Percy is Fishergirl her mom is worried that she won't have a daughter to carry on her healer legacy. Yes, there are always students--she has lots of students. But its not the same as passing down her craft to her daughter as her own mother passed it down to her.

My Neonmob card set launched today! I've talked about Neonmob in the past, it's a site where you make your own sets of artist trading cards and people collect them. The game aspect is actually pointless, it's literally just about collecting, the cards aren't FOR a game, but people still put money down for paid packs.
I'm posting about it in case any of the other artists in here are interested in an extra place to get exposure and passive income. My series released 10 hours ago and the royalties on card packs are already up to $4.20. The series goes 'out of print' in 6 months, I'll let you guys know the final tally on how much money I get out of it. There are 80 cards in the set and I put several months of work into it, but it's also a bunch of original character and story concepts that I would have eventually developed anyways. I don't expect the pack royalties to add up to my time investment, but I still have full ownership of my work and I'm going to crosspost everything to DA/FA. Possibly some of the better images could be prints or something? I don't know.
If anyone here has old inktobers (or monster girl challenges, or any other series of artwork) I highly suggest giving Neonmob a look. You have to go through a user voting and admin approval process for 'pro' series but you can make amateur series (no paid pack options) whenever you want. That way people will get to know your work and want to vote for your pro submissions.
my series is here:
https://www.neonmob.com/series/rane-story-2-unity-stars/ Give the whole site a look over. It's an interesting concept and the userbase isn't huge so any of us can be a big fish in the small pond.

The only issue is the default of everything being in portrait while all of my stuff's mostly in landscape. there are ways around it, of course, but that's still a lot of work put into what is basically "Get people excited in your art/characters by repackaging it in a fun collectible way" which I so love. I think the rules currently are that you can't just take photos of random shit in your house, or use dollmakers, or make shape tools in MSPaint. And no fanart. Try putting out an amateur series of old work and then a pro submission once that series gets seen. Rane Story 2 is a pro series, but Rane Story 1 was an amateur series of sketches that looked like pic related.

>>111443684 just do it
Just drawing and drawing a comic are two different things. You won't learn how you actually want to draw your comic until you've started drawing it.
maybe you don't want to start on your baby right away
but you could always just start with a throw away idea and run with it until you're tired of it
or just do the chapter 0 of your baby and don't end it until you've figured things out
Anonymous
>>111444026 cropped/dolled up comic panels might actually be the best way to do this.
Otherwise, it's hard to look at my old non-comic art and imagine anyone would want to have it as cards, or else even the things where I've done 200 designs, I'd have to upload and add descriptions or letterboxes or do cleanup or this or that and it would just take hours of effort for something I've kind of already PUT online for people to appreciate. Most of the characters I've made up so far have been intended to be game designs. Still, it's super tempting. I should at least try. Thanks for this reminder.

>>111449454 I've been doing pic related since 2015 in my native language (Serbia). First 150-something pages I published over on tumblr up until the end of 2016. It had 0 attraction and some of my friends couldn't read it on their phones properly, which is their preferred way of reading comics/manga. After a break, in 2017, I started publishing the comic through a web-magazine which was basically a webcomic hosting site (mobile-friendly and all of that) where I continued to update on a monthly basis somewhere around 250 pages. The site itself was Croatian, but the authors were all from The Balkans and we have pretty much the same language, so that wasn't a problem. I would say it pretty much helped us to put our work out there. The site has unfortunately stopped with their publishing work and even before that I have been translating it to English.
The things I learned were:
1) Comics are a niche market. It has more in common with hobbies like miniatures and TCG, than books and films. And I'm talking world-wide, so you can only imagine how microscopic it is when you limit it by not publishing it in English.
2) Even though manga is popular, most people won't read something that hasn't a anime adaptation, or is not getting adapted any time soon. All of those sales numbers come from One Piece, DB, Naruto and such. Even Berserk had the 90s anime. Our work is pretty much those obscure titles nobody clicks on, because it's uncharted waters and they don't want to give their time of the day for something like that.

3) I've been publishing this comic in English weekly since May over at WT, Tapas, SJ and NewGrounds - I have 31 followers on WT, 29 ond Tapas, 0 on SJ (and I even dropped because the upload was always buggy) and have 0 reactions/replies on Newgrounds. On the other hand, just as a experiment, I've put up a vague description and teasers for my new title (which is 10 years old at this point, because I started doing it in HS) and it already has 12 followers on WT and 9 on Tapas, even though not a single page has been posted. Try and wrap your head around that.
My advice is to cut your losses and go straight to English. You can always post both, I've seen people do that. I even used to print the original Serbian title in my fanzine, but I've been meeting a lot of people outside of my country who couldn't read it, so as of now I'm focusing exclusively for the international market.
Good luck!

>>111452503 Never. Worst case scenario is that you should shelf it, and then later rediscover and rework it. In my case, having a smaller cast and a smaller setting would be a good idea because this is a webcomic that'll update with 1, maybe 2 pages a week, not a weekly airing TV sitcom where there's enough time to flesh everyone out.

>>111451554 This is one of the richer pages regarding art and backgrounds. Overall, the comic's heavily focused on discussion and dialogues and has kind of a weird pacing with averages of 12 pages and sometimes 2000+ words per chapter. That's also why it's a hassle for me to translate.

>hey we'll help you with free domain name registration for X amount of bandwidth, and once you exceed that, we'll hook you up with ad services and then you'll get unlimited hosting, and if your ad clicks start exceeding your data usage by Y amount, you get some overflow money, but we'll keep track of all that. and also, here's a free web-based WYSIWYG editor we partner with, so you can design your site if you don't know how to HTML by hand y'know? I guess if not for fones and shit, that would probably be pretty popular with some people.

>>111456571 Github Pages lets you host simple static websites for free, you get 1 GB of storage and 100 GB of monthly bandwidth. I haven't used it, so I don't know how approachable it is (Github is oriented around git, which is a fairly complex version control system) but it's integrated with a static site generator that could make development easier. Neocities is similar, it's free and has an in-browser editor. Neither of them are really designed to scale up and you'd need some shitty drop-in utility like Disqus for a comments section, but they may be useful if you're looking to experiment with building your own site.

I've tried recently and no one wanted to get near it with a ten foot pole so that's why I went with the fanzine route.
Your art has room for improvement. Focus more on the background perspective and go with something a little less complicated. The characters don't look bad at all and the paneling itself is really dynamic, so that's a plus. Good luck in your work and don't give up, because you're on your way.

ComicFury has almost limitless rules for what you can upload for comic. You just have to watch yourself on the forums, since they're liberal, SJW-progressive heavy. Just upload a comic there for hosting, but don't bother with their forums.

The problem is new writers or trend chasers don't understand that they need to understand why a concept works and borrow from that and not just copy paste the work they are "borrowing" from.
