They thought that they needed more people than just Sonic Fans to like the movie so they tried to make a version of Sonic with global modern appeal but failed terribly when they went too far into realism and music chosen for cool factor rather than fitting the themes of the source material.
I hope it achieves unimaginable success so studios are forced to acknowledge that money comes from kow towing to people who like the source material rather than making adaptions based on a checklist of things that are "Historically Profitable"
