>>111255828>Newman shot himself in the foot later by trying to include Shade in his wider universe of stories and making it incredibly inconsistent with what he wasYeah you get that a lot with the Wold Newton writers who try really hard to mesh stuff together that doesn't work.
>a great example of using a superhero/pulp hero as a horror villainThis sounds really interesting and I'll definitely try to check it out.
Exploring a correlation between a pulp hero and a horror villain is an interesting premise when several of them seem to pluck elements right out of the horror monsters that were popular still at the time.
I'd even argue there is a direct correlation between the classic trinity of horror monsters (Dracula, Frankenstein, Mr Hyde) and the classic trinity of pulp heroes (The Shadow, Doc Savage, The Spider)
>>111256254Pulp isn't really a genre so much as it's a medium, and you can find pulp stories of all kinds online if you look hard enough. For the heroes specifically depends really on your taste.
If you want fast-paced action with high thrills, I strongly recommend The Spider, Operator #5 and Secret Agent X
If you like the more global adventure stuff, go with Doc Savage (I don't really like Doc myself but he's a highly important character for a reason)
If you want stuff that edges closer to fantasy and mysticism, go with The Green Lama and G-8, and of course Robert E Howard's famous creations
If you want more straight-forward detective mysteries, read The Phantom Detective and The Avenger.
I also recommend Fu Manchu. The racial stuff is horribly outdated as expected (as with most of these), but if you can get past that, they are quite enjoyable and the character is great.
The Shadow spans a lot of these and is obviously my favorite so recommending stuff for him is a whole different story. But you can start with this image and by going in this link you'll get all of his stories in PDF format
