Of course, this leads to the reader thinking some things are OOC, like the Avengers not caring for the mutants, or geniuses not improving the world. But the audience knows to handwave such stuff, because they understand, on a metal level, what the real reasons for this is. Which is the exact same reason why Batman is vaguely in the late 30s-early 40s for 99% of a century and doesn't age.
But.
If you start letting characters, in the story, call out other characters, for not doing x, while also expecting the audience to not be weirded out x isn't happening and handwave it for meta reasons, you're retarded.
Either let supergeniuses alter the world and criticise them when/if they fail, or if you don't want the world to be too different, let the audience handwave it, but don't have the audacity to have other characters call out what you expect the audience to handwave.
