The former Iron Curtain block did adhere to the whole social security net thing for example - the quality of life wasn't great, but if you were a mediocre worker with a blue collar job, you knew you were pretty much set for life. You'd have a home, healthcare, affordable food, and even some spa/seaside vacations. Why do you think dumb, poorly educated boomers in those countries still want that brand of communism back? They were provided for, had no responsibility for anything, and the only thing the state wanted from them in return was that they wouldn't ask for anything else, which was easy.
The current Chinese regime, on the other hand, is enjoying all the benefits of capitalism while providing very little social security. And of course, it's also a dictatorship.
