Watchmen employs many techniques that you don't seem to count as anything other than "formal convention". It contains a comic within a comic, visual characterization (e.g. Rorschach and his shifting inkblots), a palindromic/bilaterally symmetric chapter, Dr. Manhattan's vision of time represented through the comic book medium, repeating motifs, a 9-panel grid for constraint purposes, and probably a lot of other shit I'm forgetting.
That being said, it's not perfect and it's not the best. It does a lot at once (comic book history, playing with archetypes, multimedia, etc), and does it pretty well. Upon re-reads, you find new information, details and clues, mostly visual, that tighten the whole work.
