There only ever needs to be two Robins. The first Robin who is now grown, and the new Robin who interacts with the grown Robin. It doesn't matter who they are, but any more Robins than that is just overkill. Damian definitely should have stayed dead though even if I loved the bastard

Damian should have been retired as a cape and forced to do normal kid things. He can get into schoolboy hijinks to mix things up and maybe fight some small time supervillains but he's shown as being so short and young it goes from the kinda irresposible that is most robins to the insane.

You can try to transition from Tim to Damian but that's a multi year arc where Tim does his own thing as Red Robin but that shit has to stick and he needs to be a non-gotham non-bat family hero who can stand on his own feet.

Might make for a fun out of continuity comic.
All of them become Robin at the same time, even Steph and Carrie. Damian is still Bruce's only son, but Dick can be the one calling the shots among them.
Jason is the brash one that thinks he can lead better than Dick and is always challenging his authority.
Tim is the brains of the operation and the one Dick goes to for answers.
This is what We Are Robin should have been.

Damian is fine as the current Robin. Morrison wrote Bruce having a biological son well. Dick and Damian's dynamic was top notch and it was even fine when Bruce took the mantle back. But Tim needs to retire from capes IMO, and stop being a Robin. I think he and Babs should go legit and join the GCPD. Make a new Gotham Central book with them and a couple other cops as protags. Jason isn't ever not gonna be the Red Hood unless he's asked to fill in as Batman a time or two. Dick and Jason sharing the Batman mantle after Bruce retires and until Damian turns 21 is the dream for me. Cass becomes Batgirl again and Steph stays as Spoiler. Duke leaves the Batfamily and starts his own brand in a new city. Batwoman gets a new city.

It can work

The thing is, none of them is Batman because Dick refuses to let himself be defined by tragedy, Jason is unable to let things go and think in the greater good and Tim is always afraid of crossing the line and ending like a villian. Damian will probably become Batman but will need all 3 of them to actually do all the things Bruce did by himself.

I agree. Would've been kinda nice that Batman's bio son quit the Bat life entirely, he didn't choose that life and I think inheriting that role is antithetical to the idea of Batman (choosing to turn trauma into a meaningful way forward). I don't like the idea of Batman as royalty, passing from father to son.

I don't really care for Robin in general on any level no matter who's wearing the domino mask. I always liked Grayson more as Nightwing, and my favorite period was when he was Batman. Robin is absent or barely present for most of my favorite Batman stories and runs.

Sidekicks as a concept are basically going away these days. Anyone can hold a book if DC just gives them the chance. True you might say they don't sell and are thus not successful, but many people speak very highly of a lot of series that are just 6 issues.

Holding a series for years is basically worthless, Tim held a series in the days where tertiary characters having long runs was standard and in the 2000s if a run lasted that long they'd keep it around because cancelling a book in the 100s looked bad.

The problem is Timfans don't get the character. They just want him to be Robin forever to stroke the notion that he's the absolute bestest Robin and no one can top him. But as a role, Robin is always going to be a stepping stone; a sidekick. Doesn't matter how good he is at being it, he'll never be an equal. Making him Red Robin was a good move, but since New 52 that role's just been a fancier title for a regular Robin instead of his own thing. Dixon had the best idea with him just wanting to be a hero for a while but then moving on to finding his own way; he made it clear Tim wasn't about being a superhero forever. Then some shift happened when Identity Crisis came and the 03 Titans series and a new kind of tim fan came, one that just wanted him to be Dick, but better.

Same conundrum Cass gets stuck in by her fans, really.
