Her name is Fang. So it's Spear and Fang. Also Genndy namedropped Robert E. Howard in an interview I watched earlier in referencing influences for Primal and REH is the creator of Conan (whom Genndy also namedropped). AND the very first story REH ever wrote and sold was called Spear and Fang.

My only issue with Spear is that he sorta just froze and watch his family get eaten, he didn't immediately just start trying to save them.

Faces and eyes, you find it all over cinema.

I like the storyboarding. The action leading the camera feels natural, the establishing shots are short and effective, and the foley works (the boar sound effect for the babies just felt wrong though).

Since the first trailers of SJ's S5 were shown Ashi was a threat to the quality of it all. The first three episodes were amazing, but afterwards the worries became true. It wasn't horrible, but given the quality it was setting up, it was quite disappointing.

This, on the other hand, I don't see how Gendy could fuck it up. He's selling it as nothing but unfiltered, cinematic, brutal, Gendy-trademark action for adults.

Completely serious question. Any femanons watch the episode, if so what did you think? If none then do people think women will 'get' the series? I'm not saying women don't like hyper violence, but watching it I really did get a sort of primal urge energy. No big surprises so far yet, since the preview clips and some online articles had given a pretty clear idea of how their origin stories will go. But I still enjoyed it even if I knew what to expect.

I loved how their facial expressions said so much even if the caveman spoke no words. Like the part where he climbs up the cliff and stands there contemplating suicide. Or the moment when he goes after the dinosaur with the intent to kill it simply because he's mourning and full of hatred towards all dinosaurs, but then he's shocked to realize it's a mother, feels momentary sympathy, then decides to kill it anyway out of rage and aimless vengeance, until he gets interrupted by the red dinosaurs. Their arrival reminds him that the red ones were the dinosaurs that were responsible for killing his family, and the sight of the baby dinosaurs in peril makes him see them as something similar to his own dead children.
The way he collapses after the fight with the two red ones is great too. Even if he got his revenge, he doesn't feel particularly happy about it because his family is still gone.

1. What is going on with the animation itself? It’s very choppy and inconsistent. Is this a budgetary concession? If not, what is the purpose for this? It’s not the same kind of choppy as say, your average anime. It’s closer to something like rotoscope jank (obviously this isn’t rotoscoped).
2. Where is the narrative propulsion? Revenge on the red dinos is already complete... will this just be fighting over and over and nothing else? I don’t feel a goal or a direction at all.

I loved it, but I figured someone should ask.

The animation is fine. It has a rough quality to it which is reflective of the story, characters, and setting. It wouldn't feel right at all if it was super clean like Samurai Jack's animation.

You're assuming this is going to be one single story arc stretched over many episodes, but the "narrative propulsion" so far is SURVIVAL which is enough for a series like this.

Not sure if it's important, but one of the red guys didn't die. The one with the lone horn was killed by Spear, the two-horn was killed by Fang, the large mother dinosaur died from their combined attack, but the one with three very low horns just slunk away right at the beginning and wasn't seen again.
The three-horn was the one who killed Spear's wife. The other two killed his children.

I grew up in the 90s when the dinosaur craze was at it's height. You know how some girls get a weird obsession with horses? I got that way with dinosaurs. Primal is making me remember why I loved the Jurassic Park movies even though they constantly gave me nightmares about being eaten alive.

I don't know if I feel any kind of primal urge but I did feel adrenaline when the cryodrakon almost found Spear hiding in the tree and watching his family get eaten.

They recreated the shot that they released as promotional art back when they first announced the series.

Now that you mentioned it, it looks a lot like the humongous red dinosaur, except without the horn.
Maybe they decided red is an aggressive color that works better for a villain, so they changed Fang's colour. But they liked the red design so they reused it for another character.

I loved it. I'm not really crazy about dinos in particular but I love adventure stories and there's nothing bad about some raw, bloody violence.

Mostly just Fang herself. I wanted my own pet dinosaur so badly when I was a kid, so the team-up between Spear and Fang is the main appeal of the series to me.

But if I had to choose something else, I'm particularly curious about the raptors. When I first saw the trailer, I thought that pic related was a chase scene, but after looking at it more, I was thinking they don't look that aggressive. So I want to see if either Spear or Fang becomes the leader of a pack of raptors, which would be awesome.
