I feel like the pirates, or at least Hook and Smee, are at least somewhat self aware about the kind of life they lead. It’s not exactly a safe one, nor one that you can lead with any degree of innocence. As for the second point, we’re talking about magical creatures whose word is only the sea around them and whose only experience with mortality is seeing smaller fish get eaten by bigger fish, and the occasional pirate or pirate’s prisoners stop moving after being under water. Do you think these creatures, who are likely either too ignorant to understand mortality and the finality of death, or too callous to care, WOULDN’T have tried drowning a lost boy for kicks at least once?
