If they manage to keep that tone throughout the series, it could have easily been a 9/10 show. Sadly that's not what happened. It quickly devolved into a weird "fun is over, time to grow up guys" tone which was so overdone and cynical, it killed it for me.
The middle seasons around Foreveralone finn and jake's kids growing up felt like the wrong direction for the show and were both depressing and joyless. Things like Orgalorg, the comet, what Jake really was and Finn's dad all were built up like they were important plot points for multiple seasons, but none of it actually meant anything or had any payoff. Anything involving Betty and Magic Man in the later seasons felt like self insert OC stuff.
The show ended with a random, spur of the moment war, then a random, spur of the moment big bad showing up. It all feel cheap and rushed.
Stakes was good at least.
