I had something very similar happen to my Bard a few weeks ago during a session of DnD.
>I’m the group’s face so I’m the one who talks to all the NPCs
>group gets brought under questioning about the murders of a local gang in Waterdeep
>we totally killed them, however
>when the conflict began my Bard was preforming in the inn and was unable to identify who started the conflict
>when the party arrived at the gang’s hideout they were attacked on sight, the violence that resulted in the deaths of the gang members was in self defense
>DM just stares at me
>my fellow players stare at me
>I just smile back at them
>DM eventually determines that it’s dependent on what my Bard believes to be true
My constant high persuasion checks also helped out, but my DM said he allowed it because “I was lying by telling the truth”. Was a really fun night.
