I know bad writers have been doing it since at least the 90's, so it's definitely old news at this point, but my fuck am I tired of "hack" being used as this magic catch-all verb for when the writer wants a character to be smart in a vaguely tech-y way, but can't be assed to actually do any intellectual legwork.

Like, damn, there are so many ways Bendis could have handled this. Hijacking the emotional wavelength that the ring operates on by simulating and broadcasting the brainwaves that correspond with "willpower." Emulating green spectrum radiation. Hell, have her pull a Silver Age Sinestro and design a ring that functions by absorbing and repurposing a Green Lantern ring's energy.

But no, she "hacked the Green Lantern power battery." Like, on a computer, I guess. Fucking Bendis.

Or you can skip all that and have it be an old damaged power ring and battery that she finds. The ring has half the power, but none of the protocols for 'worthiness' to use it. She would struggle against enemies that guys Hal and Kyle could cream, and her journey would be to prove her worth as a 'real' Green Lantern. After a while Salaak finds out about the ring and battery and deems her worthy of a real ring or some bullshit like that.

But a storyline like that wouldn't get woke pee-pee touches though...

Woah woah woah, there slow down, there buddy. Heroes having journey's and story arcs where they have to learn to use, control and earn their status as a hero is a dated thought process. The modern progressive hero is powerful and awesome out the gate. To even insinuate that a character should earn the readers empathy and endear themselves to us through trial and tribulation that speaks to us on a human level is just flat out racist.

It's more for his family he is adding those characters than selfgratulating. Bendis has two adopted black daughters and he has said that he adds those teenager/child character for them.

Setting aside the clearly adult facial proportions, she's wearing full makeup. Even if they fixed the former, as long as they kept the latter it'd be the same. An 11yo wearing full makeup and consistently insisting she's a teen would indicate something really unsavory in her background.

Box of scraps meme aside, having Riri essentially assemble her armor out of off the shelf components that she stole using cutting edge tools and equipment that she also stole literally sets her up as "shitty version of Stark" and plays into a lot of negative stereotypes about black people.

Her ring has a "genie" in it, like Aladdin. She has to verbally call out what she wants and the genie will argue and insult her. It's actually a demon that's evil and trying to get free.

She copies the Green Lanterns and builds a "Lantern" herself out of scrap from a magical villain's weapon so she can better control the entity and harness power without it. But she's explicitly not a lantern and uses a different power source.

After a while she gets ahold of a few other magical artifacts and the demon escapes. The team has to fight him because lord knows the titans haven't done Trigon enough. Then he gets sucked into the lantern and they throw it into space and she becomes the Green Witch or something and is her own character.

The thing is that the demographic they want can't afford comics because nobody can afford comics outside of adult men with lot of disposable income. 4 or 5 bucks for a floppy means fucking nobody cares to follow a story even if they otherwise would because buying multiple comics a month means you're probably spending as much as you would on a used or older video game a month. A trade is worth the cost of basically the same even if it's more efficient and time per entertainment means you'll never equal it.

When you're targeting poor kids with an expensive luxury item nobody will care.
