The idea of him not being able to save the past but he can still save the future was an idea that was slowly, but surely building up throughout seasons 1-4 with things like him choosing to help people over entering a time portal and ending Aku or him being reassured by his parents in a vision that Aku's victory in the past wasn't his failure and that he has many other victories in the form of him helping, saving, and bringing hope to people in the future
