>>109189159>This is a very by the numbers tough guy revenge characterI don't want to just say no he isn't because he kind of is and it is incredibly reductive but that is sort of the point.
The storytime is finished so I can just say this, but the reason leaving his wife alive is such a fundamentally dumb idea is that The Boys isn't actually about Superheroes being evil. Ennis spent most of it shitting on the comics industry and superheroes, but the underlying point of the series was to deconstruct and damn characters like Billy Butcher. Someone who is initially presented as, to use a stupid term, a cold blooded alpha badass but ultimately reveals himself to be an incredibly destructive aimless monster who just wants his wife back.
There's a reason why everyone says, Butcher, Baker, Candlestick Maker, is what makes this series. In adapting Rogen either missed the point or decided not to tackle it. I'm not going to say the show is worse for it. They actually did something far more interesting with the heroes of the series, making them all more like the Deep before they went off the deep end, which is honestly what I think superheroes would be more like. But Butcher in the show and the Boys in general are just not as interesting as the heroes.
