Court cases in the 70s and 80s more or less broke them since it was ruled that the organizations could be held liable for the actions of their members if their rhetoric was determined to have incited illegal actions. Most white supremacist groups are also thoroughly monitored and infiltrated by multiple levels of law enforcement. The actual heydey of the KKK was the second iteration of the group back in the 1920s which boasted millions of members, today there are only 3000-6000 members.
